What the Check Engine Light Actually Means
Your car's computer (ECU) monitors dozens of sensors. When something reads outside the normal range, it turns on the check engine light (CEL) and stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
**A steady light** = something needs attention soon.
**A flashing light** = serious problem, stop driving.
The 8 Most Common Causes
1. Loose or Faulty Gas Cap
The cheapest fix. A loose cap can trigger an EVAP system code.
**Fix:** Tighten cap, clear the code, see if it returns.
2. Oxygen (O2) Sensor Failure
Common after 100,000 km. Affects fuel economy and emissions.
**Fix:** O2 sensor replacement — 400-1,200 AED depending on car.
3. Catalytic Converter Issues
Rare but expensive. Usually caused by ignored misfires.
**Fix:** 1,500-8,000 AED depending on car.
4. Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor
Dirty or failed MAF causes rough idle, poor acceleration, high fuel use.
**Fix:** Clean or replace — 300-1,500 AED.
5. Spark Plugs or Ignition Coils
Misfires trigger CEL and rough running.
**Fix:** 100-300 AED per plug/coil.
6. Vacuum Leak
A cracked hose or intake gasket lets air into the engine.
**Fix:** Locate and replace — 200-800 AED.
7. EGR Valve Problems
Carbon buildup clogs the EGR valve — common in Dubai's stop-start traffic.
**Fix:** Clean or replace — 400-1,200 AED.
8. Transmission Issues
Modern transmissions trigger CEL for shift problems.
**Fix:** Diagnostic scan first — cost varies widely.
What to Do When Your CEL Comes On
1. Don't panic — but don't ignore it
2. Check the gas cap first
3. Note any symptoms (rough idle, reduced power, strange noise)
4. Get a diagnostic scan
5. Fix the root cause — clearing the code without fixing will just bring it back
